Down vs Down Alternative Comforters

It might be time to swap our your current bedding for something warmer and cozier. We want to help you get what you need. So, do you splurge and go with 100% down, or do you save some cash and go with a down alternative? Other than price, do you know what the difference is?

Down comforters are made from the light, fluffy clusters and plumules that come from beneath the feathers of ducks and geese. The quality of down can be determined by the fill power or loft. Fill power is defined as the amount of down per ounce. The more fill power, the greater the fluff and the better the insulating ability. We recommend purchasing a fill with a fill power of 600 or more to keep warm and cozy all winter long.

Down alternative comforters are great options for anyone allergic to down feathers or for anyone on a stricter budget. Down alternative can be made from rayon, polyester or cotton, to name a few. Although these synthetic options do not regulate temperatures as well as 100% down, they are MUCH easier to maintain and clean.

See our down-alternative comforter here as well as our cotton comforter option here.

A helpful tip when purchasing a comforter is to look at the stitching construction on both down and down alternative fills. We recommend going with a box stitch construction, one that forms a grid pattern across the surface. This will prevent your comforter from clumping and shifting over time. We hope this helps you select your next comforter and lucky for you, Crane & Canopy provides both options! You can find them here.
